Given their theological bent, Christians have often operated on the premise that the only truth that matters is abstract or philosophical truth. They have assumed that a person's worldview, including their own, consists only of ideas. This is a dangerous fallacy...
We are influenced by images at least as much as ideas. We may assent to the proposition that the true end of life is not to make money & accumulate possessions, but if our minds are filled with images of big houses & fancy clothes, our actual behavior will run in the direction of materialism.

{tip of my tongue}
good evening.
it has been a good day.
job no. 2 had no power & was slightly flooded due to ceiling leakage so rob & beetle cooked us eggs & bacon by flashlight...we sat around in the restaurant lobby for an hour by the fire & then went home, ice skating through the parking lot.
i've finally finished danny meyer's setting the table - the transformative power of hospitality in business.
it would be pretty easy to accomplish what he recommends.
visiting his restaurant tabla is on my list for new york in the fall. among many other things.
after work & floyd errands (i got to see my bakery peeps!) i downloaded some new music.
please go & buy the civil wars ep poison & wine. it's 3.96 on itunes, & it's brilliant.
only 4 songs so i've listened to them probably 5 times over wishing there were more.
well. i think i shall have a beer & watch the wilson episode of house.
goodnight.

apparitions
i'm feeling artistically unfulfilled lately. perhaps because i want to have my cake & eat it too.
i look at the pictures i've taken & the scribbles i've drawn & the books i've read & the music i've listened to & the food i've made & the projects i've worked on & maybe i've spread my passion too thinly...

{the tip of the iceberg}
I said grace cannot prevail until law is dead, until moralizing is out of the game. The precise phrase should be, until our fatal love affair with the law is over - until, finally & for good, our lifelong certainty that someone is keeping score has run out of steam & collapsed. As long as we leave, in our dramatizations of grace, one single hope of a moral reckoning, one possible recourse to salvation by bookkeeping, our freedom-dreading hearts will clutch it to themselves. And even if we leave none at all, we will grub for ethics that are not there rather than face the liberty to which grace calls us.

{signs & wonders}
people, you all should really listen to animal kingdom & eat more butter-browned fish, read danny meyer's book & give more hugs (ignore this if you already do).
lately i've wanted to be my own version of harold crick's ana pascal...complete with star tattoo. her sassy bakery with the round red window always makes me happy, & i can see myself owning something similar. i've already picked the music playlist...haha.
& then of course there's the dream to be the female counterpart to Ned the Pie Maker, with a quirky half smile, & own The Pie Hole with green checkered floors.
it's amusing to me that studios think they can reliably promote a movie by pasting "from the creators of the Matrix trilogy!" onto the trailer.
anyways...enough rambles.
" I have not taken into consideration the fact that some people, on our country & our times, deeply despise the art of painting & pretend that it only produces idolatry. A good Christian will not be led to superstition by pictures or images any more than an honest man to crime for wearing a sword. One should be totally mad to wish to address a prayer to a picture, to a piece of wood or stone. A picture is more good than evil as long as it is well executed, with art & with honesty." ~Albrecht Durer

{between noon & three}
The Reformation was a time when men went blind, staggering drunk because they had discovered, in the dusty basement of late medievalism, a whole cellarful of fifteen-hundred-year-old, two-hundred proof grace - of bottle after bottle of pure distillate of Scripture, one sip of which would convince anyone that God saves us single-handedly. The word of the gospel - after all those centuries of trying to lift yourself into heaven by worrying about the perfection of your bootstraps - suddenly turned out to be a flat announcement that the saved were home before they started...Grace has to be drunk straight: no water, no ice, & certainly no ginger ale; neither goodness, nor badness, nor the flowers that bloom in the spring of super spirituality could be allowed to enter into the case.

[friends they are jewels]
i have a lot to do but i'd rather crawl under a rock & look at photography books & read c. s. lewis for several months with a steady supply of sushi & thomas newman...
these are from all saints day. i've been using the digital less & the film canon more, which i've never used before. not sure how they'll turn out (these are digital).
